Gratitude

As the year 2008 comes to a close, I am reflecting a great deal on the blessings of this year, and how I've gotten to where I am today. I watch Mina as she falls asleep in my arms and tears well up in my eyes at this beautiful gift of new life. As she sleeps peacefully, I think of her journey ahead of her. I think of the journey I've had thus far, the things I want to share with her, and mistakes I want to keep her from making. I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude to our Lord, because, despite the mistakes I've made, He has brought me here.
I look around at all of us, and how we've all grown together over the years, and I'm just amazed. Several of us have been blessed with children this year, others of us living out vocations in careers of ministry, leading others closer to Christ in their work. We have all come so far from when we all began attending STM Lifenights.
The Lord continues to give us Himself each day in the Eucharist, and today, we celebrate His birth into our world. How beautiful that moment must've been to see the Divine infant open his eyes for the first time, and gaze at our grace-filled Blessed Mother. How honored must St. Joseph have felt to have the Lord wrap His tiny hand around just one of his fingers. I bet there were many times that baby Jesus tugged at his beard while learning how his hands worked. I wonder if Mary had to learn to put up some sort of a wee-wee blocker while changing his diaper. All of these moments which seem so mundane, yet our Lord, humbled Himself to be a tiny, helpless, newborn, just as we all were once.
We are blessed, and I am immensely grateful that He has given me the gift of knowledge of Him and His church so that I might love him more, the graces He's provided, and the people He's placed in my life, including my wonderful girlfriends.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

Jesus' Helper

Check out this beautiful, heart-warming story about a modern-day "St. Nick" from Virginia. This parishioner is teaching children the real meaning of Christmas, and Santa Claus.

One Week until Christmas!

In officially one week from today, we will wake up to find Christmas morning! I can hardly wait! Being my husband and I's first Christmas together (as a married couple), I have been starting to think about my favorite traditions that I would like to carry over with our new family. Christmas eve mass followed by a gift of new pajamas is at the top of my list. And I don't think it would feel right without waking up to carols and the smell of sweet cinnamon buns in the oven...

What about you? What are your favorite Christmas traditions?? Be careful, I may just borrow some good ideas...

"Having children is selfish"

Sorry for no picture but I wanted to share this article:

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/21115130/

This guy is part of a growing minority of men getting vasectomies before 30. It's a small population that has decided they don't want children (or responsibility)...

I have to say, at least he is up front with women he dates and tells them what he's done and that he's not having kids instead of wasting their time and other such things. So sad.

Live Action Video

I posted a similar story about this subject last month. Here once again, a pro-life group went undercover in a Planned Parenthood clinic.

It breaks my heart to think about the effect that Planned Parenthood must have had on so many young girls. We can even ignore the issue of abortion, and it is still very clear how hurtful this organization is to women. Young girls who are clearly in trouble are being misguided and their serious issues are being "hid under the rug", rather giving them a safe haven and helping them find appropriate help. As women, do we not have more value than this?? We truly need to stand up together against this kind of behavior and treatment. On top of everything, our society considers this a "charitable" organization! Let's pray for young women faced with unexpected pregnancies as a result of abusive relationships and rape, that they may find appropriate counseling and help.

To watch the video:

For a list of businesses that support planned parenthood, visit http://www.cogforlife.org/ppsupporters.htm. In many cases it is very difficult to avoid consumption of their products/services, but we can all do our part to shop elsewhere if possible, and/or write letters pleading them to stop supporting Planned Parenthood.

Sad but True News

Msgr. Dale Fushek Excommunicated

I received this from my sister-in-law earlier today. Let us pray for Msgr. Dale, and Fr. Dippre, as well as Bishop Olmstead. I'm sure it was a very difficult decision to take serious action and required great fortitude. I have met him several times and he is a very sweet man and solid Bishop.

Let us pray that his example of courage might be an example for other Bishops out there. We do not pray for excommunications for we should want others to be holier than us provided we become as holy as we should (from the Litany of Humility), but we should pray for justice in all cases of the misconduct of priests.

A Novena for Christmas!

Begin on Dec. 16

Divine Infant,
after the wonders of Your birth in Bethlehem,
You wished to extend Your infinite mercy to the whole world
by calling the Wise Men by heavenly inspiration to Your crib,
which was in this way changed into a royal throne.
You graciously received those holy men
who were obedient to the divine call
and hastened to Your feet.
They recognized and worshiped You as Prince of Peace,
the Redeemer of mankind,
and the very Son of God.

Show us also Your goodness and almighty power.
Enlighten our minds,
strengthen our wills,
and inflame our hearts to know You,
to serve You, and to love You in this life,
that we may merit to find our joy in You
eternally in the life to come.

Jesus, most powerful Child,
I implore You again to help me:

(State your intention here)

Divine Child,
great omnipotent God,
I implore through Your most Holy Mother's most powerful intercession,
and through the boundless
mercy of Your omnipotence as God,
for a favorable answer to my prayer during this Novena.
Grant me the grace of possessing You eternally
with Mary and Joseph
and of adoring You with Your holy angels and saints.

Amen.

Rules for Radicals

Hey everyone. So I came across this author, Saul Alinsky, during election time. Our president-elect actually studied this method and worked for an organization that used these tactics when we just fresh out of college. If you look at the "No on Prop 8" campaign, you will see the following rules hard at work.

First, the dedication of this book:

"Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology, and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins -- or which is which), the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom -- Lucifer."

Anybody see a red flag?

"Some of these rules are ruthless, but they work. Here are the rules to be aware of:

RULE 1: "Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have." Power is derived from 2 main sources - money and people. "Have-Nots" must build power from flesh and blood. (These are two things of which there is a plentiful supply. Government and corporations always have a difficult time appealing to people, and usually do so almost exclusively with economic arguments.)

RULE 2: "Never go outside the expertise of your people." It results in confusion, fear and retreat. Feeling secure adds to the backbone of anyone. (Organizations under attack wonder why radicals don't address the "real" issues. This is why. They avoid things with which they have no knowledge.)

RULE 3: "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy." Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)

RULE 4: "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity's very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)

RULE 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon." There is no defense. It's irrational. It's infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)

RULE 6: "A good tactic is one your people enjoy." They'll keep doing it without urging and come back to do more. They're doing their thing, and will even suggest better ones. (Radical activists, in this sense, are no different that any other human being. We all avoid "un-fun" activities, and but we revel at and enjoy the ones that work and bring results.)

RULE 7: "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag." Don't become old news. (Even radical activists get bored. So to keep them excited and involved, organizers are constantly coming up with new tactics.)

RULE 8: "Keep the pressure on. Never let up." Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)

RULE 9: "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself." Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist. (Perception is reality. Large organizations always prepare a worst-case scenario, something that may be furthest from the activists' minds. The upshot is that the organization will expend enormous time and energy, creating in its own collective mind the direst of conclusions. The possibilities can easily poison the mind and result in demoralization.)

RULE 10: "If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive." Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog. (Unions used this tactic. Peaceful [albeit loud] demonstrations during the heyday of unions in the early to mid-20th Century incurred management's wrath, often in the form of violence that eventually brought public sympathy to their side.)

RULE 11: "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative." Never let the enemy score points because you're caught without a solution to the problem. (Old saw: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Activist organizations have an agenda, and their strategy is to hold a place at the table, to be given a forum to wield their power. So, they have to have a compromise solution.)

RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)"

Newseek says the Bible supports gay marriage

Surprise! I guess every Christian church out there and every believer in the Word of God has just been reading and interpreting the Bible wrong.

Oi. If this is not the work of Satan I don't know what is. This woman, who doesn't seem like she is a Christian or has read more than the passages she read to write this article is totally twisting the Word of God to her own agenda. Actually, it's kind of funny and sad how badly it's twisted.

One of my favorite arguments is that the Bible is silent on lesbian "sex" so therefore its ok. Riiight. I guess she forgot to read about what happened in Sodom and Gomorah (sorry if the spelling is off. baby's napping and I don't have time to look it up).

Anyways just thought you should know what's going on.

Dignitas Personae

Dignitas Personae, or The Dignity of a Person, has been released by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith. The document addresses ethical issues regarding biomedicine and provides guidance on how to respect human life and human procreation during our scientific age. Although I personally have not tackled it yet, Dignitas Personae is said to encourage medical progress while defending the life of unborn human beings. Issues include embryo adoption, pre-implantation drugs, gene therapy, designer babies, human/animal hybrid embryos (what??) and more...

So read up girls! Dignitas Personae can be found here: http://www.usccb.org/comm/Dignitaspersonae/.

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

"Hear me and understand well, my son the least, that nothing should frighten or grieve you. Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear that sickness, nor any other sickness or anguish. Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything." — Our Lady to Juan Diego

Attention All Chocolate Lovers...

You absolutely have to try this. I definitely will! It sounds too good to be true.

Papal Advent Reflection

"But in the original text we read 'in' the coming -- 'en te parousia' -- as if the coming of the Lord were, more than a future event, a spiritual place in which we already walk in the present, during the wait, and in which we are perfectly vigilant in every personal dimension," the Holy Father explained. "In effect, this is exactly what we live in the liturgy: celebrating the liturgical seasons, we actualize the mystery -- in this case the coming of the Lord -- in such a way as to be able, so to speak, to 'walk in it' toward its full realization, at the end of time, but already drawing sanctifying virtue from it from the moment that the last times have already begun with the death and resurrection of Christ."

"Advent is the spiritual season of hope par excellence, and in this season the whole Church is called to be hope, for itself and for the world," he said. "The whole spiritual organism of the mystical body assumes, as it were, the 'color' of hope." Pope Benedict XVI

Standing up for Life

In our politically-correct culture where relativism and politeness often override the truth, many priests stay away from certain topics during homilies, in order to avoid persecution. During yesterday's refreshing Sunday mass homily, a visiting priest from an Natural Family Planning Outreach ministry fearlessly spoke to the congregation about God's BEAUTIFUL plan for marriage, family and life.

I was amazed that despite how absolutely essential these teachings are to living our faith, I have never once heard a homily even mention issues such as cohabitation, divorce and contraception. How many sacramental marriages are missing out on the amazing blessing of our Church's teachings about their vocation? How many couples are hurting because they learn about marriage from our media and culture, rather than from our Creator Himself? What couple would not want to know that their marriage is a reflection of the Trinity itself?? Perhaps my newlywed giddiness is starting to shine through these thoughts, but I truly can't image marriage any other way.

May God bless our pastor and the priest who made an effort to better educate and guide their flocks this past weekend. Let's pray for more priests to be strengthened in their vocations and spread the truth, and for Catholic married couples to have the courage share the good news with other couples.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Today we celebrate our Lady's feast, recognizing her title as the Immaculate Conception. Her special role in our salvation's history cannot be ignored, especially during this special time of Advent. Similarly to the importance of being in a state of grace when receiving our Lord in the Eucharist, it was important to God that Jesus was born of the most pure and beautiful human vessel ever created. Having been conceived without sin, Mary's hands were most worthy of holding our child Savior, her lips were worthy of kissing his face, and her womb was most worthy of housing His Majesty.

There is no woman, or human being, more beautiful than the Immaculata. As young women, let's look to her and ask her for the strength to imitate her beauty and her unwavering love for her son, so that we might one day receive Him in everlasting life.

Celebrating Advent

I never considered how much the consumer "Holiday Season" clashes with the proper celebration of Advent. Why is it that we never even consider singing the "Alleluia" during Lent, yet during Advent we decorate our homes and trees, celebrate and party every weekend, and sing songs about Christ's nativity? In many cases, we get so tired of celebrating Christmas, that by the time the epiphany arrives, our decorations are down and our lives are back to normal.

We need to make an effort to preserve the liturgical season of Advent. I am not saying that it will be easy to turn down the radio next time my favorite carol comes on, and I do still plan on baking many cookies and doing some shopping in preparation for Christmas. Nevertheless, the Church has given us Advent for a reason, and it is up to us to preserve it. Let's be counter-cultural, and celebrate CHRISTmas the Christian way ;).

It All Started with a Mouse

Fr. Jamison, the Abbot of Worth in West Sussex blames Disney for our materialistic culture. He “has accused the corporation of "exploiting spirituality" to sell its products and of turning Disneyland into a modern day pilgrimage site.” In his new book, titled Finding Happiness, Fr. Jamison “warns that society is in danger of losing its soul because of growing consumerism and the decline of religion.” (No way..!)

Fr. Jamison “suggests that many people have become obsessed with work, sex and eating in an attempt to ignore their underlying unhappiness, and criticises corporations and industries that have benefited from promoting false notions of fulfilment.” He uses Disney as the “classic example” of how consumerism is being sold as an alternative to finding happiness in traditional morality. In fact, society now sees a need to buy disney products as a prerequisite to being a “good and happy family”.

Being a fan myself, and having spent time as a “cast member” at Disneyland, I can attest to the fact that the company has created a "cult" culture unlike anything I have ever experienced, and in many ways Disney does parallel a religion. It has idols, language, pilgrimages and unique rituals. I also have no doubt that many Southern California families spend their Sundays at Disneyland, rather than going to mass, or church. Is it possible that just now, a few generations after Mickey Mouse’s inauguration, we are starting to see the effects of our pop culture? A correlation is very likely, though I would need to see much more evidence because I would claim it as “the cause”. Regardless, seems like this book might be worth reading! I will have to follow up with a blogger book report…

Sunday, November 30, 2008

In remembering that I had not posted anything in some time, I started searching my brain for something to write about. After way too much thought and a lot of writer's block, I realized that I need more reflection time in my life. Apart from a hectic schedule, I fill a lot of my free time with social activities, music, media and other distractions. I rarely take time apart from it all, to contemplate and reflect on my day and journey through life.

Quiet time would allow me to let go of extra stress and focus in on important matters such as my spirituality. It would give God a chance to speak to me, and help me to open my heart to the peace of Christ. It would let me clear my mind of extra clutter, and grow as a person. It would help to prepare my soul for Christ, especially during this Advent season. I know that squeezing in a daily reflection will be a challenge, but leading a life of contemplation is something that I need to improve in, and is no doubt a source of grace for all of us. Please pray for me as I attempt to grow in this area!

Anybody have any helpful suggestions of ways to encourage contemplation in a busy schedule?

Advice from Blessed Mother Teresa

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self centered, LOVE THEM ANYWAY. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives, DO GOOD ANYWAY. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies, SUCCEED ANYWAY. The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow, DO GOOD ANYWAY. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable, BE HONEST AND FRANK ANYWAY. What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight, BUILD ANYWAY. People really need help but may attack you if you help them, HELP PEOPLE ANYWAY. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth, GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU'VE GOT ANYWAY. Each Life is Valued

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said:

'Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not
even 1 yr. old and I'm pregnant again. I don't want kids so close together.'

So the doctor said: 'Ok and what do you want me to do?'

She said: 'I want you to end my pregnancy, and I'm counting on your help with this.'

The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady: 'I think I have a better solution for your problem. It's less dangerous for you too.'

She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.

Then he continued: 'You see, in order for you not to have to take care of 2 babies at the same time, let's kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we're going to kill one of them, it doesn't matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.

The lady was horrified and said: 'No doctor! How terrible! It's a crime to kill a child!

'I agree', the doctor replied. 'But you seemed to be ok with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.

The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point.

He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that's already been born and one that's still in the womb. The crime is the same!

Saint Therese in space

St. Thérèse Relic Makes Space Flight
NEW CANEY, Texas, NOV. 20, 2008 (Zenit.org).- St. Thérèse wrote that she wanted to be a missionary on every continent simultaneously and reach the most remote islands -- now her dream has extended to space flight. The Carmelite community of New Caney, Texas, enjoys the friendship of Colonel Ron Garan, who was on the May 31-June 14 Discovery shuttle mission. Before heading into space, Garan had called the women religious to request their prayer for the voyage, and he told them he could take some small item into space on behalf of the community. The sisters reported that the words of St. Thérèse came to mind: "I have the vocation of an apostle. I would like to travel over the whole earth to preach your name and to plant your glorious cross on infidel soil. But oh, my beloved, one mission would not be enough for me, I would want to preach the Gospel on all five continents simultaneously and even to the most remote isles. I would be a missionary, not for a few years but from the beginning of creation until the consummation of the ages." The Carmelites gave the astronaut a relic of St. Thérèse for his flight. Now, they report, she has traveled 5,735,643 miles around the earth for 14 days at 17,057 miles an hour. Meanwhile, the sisters commended the world to her intercession.

Less than 2 weeks until Advent!

Each year I seem to have a habit of putting a lot of thought into Lenten sacrifices in preparation for Easter, but during Advent I fill my time with shopping, baking, final exams ect. Although geared for families, this post has some great ideas for Advent activities to prepare us for Christmas.

Readers and bloggers, what do you do during Advent to prepare for Christ? Any suggestions??

God can be seen everywhere

Deck of Cards

You will never look at cards the same way again
It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't been heard. The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week. As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk. Just then an army sergeant came in and said, 'Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?' The soldier replied, 'I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord' The sergeant said, 'Looks to me like you're going to play cards. The soldier said, 'No, sir.You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country,I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards.
The sergeant asked in disbelief, 'How will you do that?'
'You see the Ace, Sergeant? It reminds me that there is only one God.
The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testaments
The Three represents the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.
The Four stands for the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The Five is for the five virgins there were ten but only five of them were glorified.
The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.
The Seven is for the day God rested after making His Creation.
The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives -- the eight people God spared from the flood that destroyed the Earth.
The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy.. He cleansed ten, but nine never thanked Him.
The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.
The Jack is a reminder of Satan, one of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell.
The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary.
The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings.
When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year.
There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week - 52 weeks in a year.
The four suits represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
Each suit has thirteen cards -- there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter .
So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for.
'The sergeant just stood there. After a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, 'Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?'

Another 'champion of abortion' becomes defender of life: the story of Stojan Adasevic

.- The Spanish daily “La Razon” has published an article on the pro-life conversion of a former “champion of abortion.” Stojan Adasevic, who performed 48,000 abortions, sometimes up to 35 per day, is now the most important pro-life leader in Serbia, after 26 years as the most renowned abortion doctor in the country.

“The medical textbooks of the Communist regime said abortion was simply the removal of a blob of tissue,” the newspaper reported. “Ultrasounds allowing the fetus to be seen did not arrive until the 80s, but they did not change his opinion. Nevertheless, he began to have nightmares.”

In describing his conversion, Adasevic “dreamed about a beautiful field full of children and young people who were playing and laughing, from 4 to 24 years of age, but who ran away from him in fear. A man dressed in a black and white habit stared at him in silence. The dream was repeated each night and he would wake up in a cold sweat. One night he asked the man in black and white who he was. ‘My name is Thomas Aquinas,’ the man in his dream responded. Adasevic, educated in communist schools, had never heard of the Dominican genius saint. He didn’t recognize the name”

“Why don’t you ask me who these children are?” St. Thomas asked Adasevic in his dream.

“They are the ones you killed with your abortions,’ St. Thomas told him.

“Adasevic awoke in amazement and decided not to perform any more abortions,” the article stated.

“That same day a cousin came to the hospital with his four months-pregnant girlfriend, who wanted to get her ninth abortion—something quite frequent in the countries of the Soviet bloc. The doctor agreed. Instead of removing the fetus piece by piece, he decided to chop it up and remove it as a mass. However, the baby’s heart came out still beating. Adasevic realized then that he had killed a human being,”

After this experience, Adasevic “told the hospital he would no longer perform abortions. Never before had a doctor in Communist Yugoslavia refused to do so. They cut his salary in half, fired his daughter from her job, and did not allow his son to enter the university.”

After years of pressure and on the verge of giving up, he had another dream about St. Thomas.

“You are my good friend, keep going,’ the man in black and white told him. Adasevic became involved in the pro-life movement and was able to get Yugoslav television to air the film ‘The Silent Scream,’ by Doctor Bernard Nathanson, two times.”

Adasevic has told his story in magazines and newspapers throughout Eastern Europe. He has returned to the Orthodox faith of his childhood and has studied the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas.

“Influenced by Aristotle, Thomas wrote that human life begins forty days after fertilization,” Adasevic wrote in one article. La Razon commented that Adasevic “suggests that perhaps the saint wanted to make amends for that error.” Today the Serbian doctor continues to fight for the lives of the unborn.

In need of Hope

From Gabriella at the hospital

My mother in law is such a great example of a strong, Catholic woman who is not afraid to be faithful to the Church. I am so thankful for her! On our weekly call to hubby's parents, he was lamenting that some days it's so hard to be hopeful about our crazy crazy world of ours. She made an excellent comment : all we can do is pray for conversion and live out our Catholic faith as perfectly as possible. So there!

Quick & Easy Sweet & Sour Chicken

This is a great, easy, quick recipe I tried recently. We picked up some steamed rice for it since we were bringing it to my in-laws house and Leo came out with fried rice as well. I knew that meant he doubted my meal and we were all pleasantly surprised as it was delicious!

Ingredients
2 Cups Instant Brown Rice
1/4 Cup Seasoned Rice Vinegar
2 Tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
2 Tablespoons cornstarch
2 Tablespoons apricot preserves (I used orange marmalade which was good)
2 Tablespoons canola oil, divided
1 lb. Chicken tenders, cut into bite-size pieces
4 Cloves Garlic, minced
2 Tsp. finely grated or minced ginger
1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
6 cups bite-size pieces of vegetables, such as snow peas, broccoli, & bell peppers (I used frozen stir fry veggie medley to save time and it lasts in freezer to save shopping)
1 5 oz. can sliced water chestnuts, drained (These were already in frozen mix)

Directions
  1. Prepare rice according to package directions.
  2. Meanwhile, whisk vinegar, soy sauce, cornstarch & apricot preserves in a small bown. Set aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken & cook, undisturbed, for 2 minutes. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink on the outside and just starting to brown in spots, about 2 minutes more. Transfer to a plate.
  4. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, garlic, & ginger to the pan & cook, stirring, until fragrant (20-30 seconds).
  5. Add broth & bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  6. Add vegetables, reduce heat to a simmer, cover & cook until the vegetables are tender-crisp (4-6 min.) Stir in the water chestnuts & chicken.
  7. Whisk the reserved sauce & add to the pan. Simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce is thickened & the chicken heated through, about one min. Serve with rice & enjoy!
Cook Time: 5 min. Yields: 4 Servings

Seeing Through a Child's Eyes

Since Mina has been recognizing people and communicating more frequently in the last few weeks, it's been so fun to watch her interact with people. One day this week, Leo, Mitch, Anna and I were eating lunch and there was a man with dementia sitting at a table next to us. He started speaking to her and she smiled. He sounded crazy to us saying, "I'm going to recruit that boy for my football team, he's going to be strong." To Mina, he was a person, with eyes that she could look into and a mouth to bring a smile to.

Mina now recognizes us and those she spends time with as familiar faces, but everyone else in the world, she loves because they're a person like her. It doesn't matter what they look like, if their mind is fading, or if they're Dustin Hoffman (who Mina met yesterday in an elevator at LAX). She smiles at them just the same. I just noticed this in her and thought it was such a beautiful reminder, of how we should all love like these innocent children.

Mother Poem - By Katherine Mai

Today I left some dishes dirty,
The bed got made around two-thirty;
The diapers soaked a little longer,
Their odor grew a little stronger,
The crumbs I spilled the day before
Were staring at me from the floor;
The fingerprints on the wall
I guess will still be there next fall;
The dirt streaks on the window panes
Will still be there next time it rains.
"For shame, oh lazy one," you say,
"And just what did you do today?"
I nursed a baby till she slept;
I held a toddler while she wept.
I played a game of hide-and-seek.
I squeezed a toy so it would squeak;
I pulled a sled, I sang a song.
I taught a child what's right and wrong.
What did I do the whole day through?
Not much that shows, iI guess it's true.
Unless you think that what I've done
Might be important to someone
With bright blue eyes and soft blonde hair,
If that is true, I 've done my share.

Stop the Hate???

Now that Prop 8 has passed the real drama has begun. In this last week the No on Prop 8 supporters have protested and filed law suits. They can disagree with my support of Prop 8 all they want but I would like to challenge them in their behavior of doing so. They have protested outside of Mormon churches with signs that are ridiculously rude. What happened to the tolerance they preached about while campaigning? Just a few days ago some no on Prop 8 people threw poop on the front doors of a Catholic Church in West Hollywood. What happened to "Stop the Hate"? At a rally in West Hollywood the No on Prop 8 people were throwing around the N word blaming African American's for the passing of Prop 8. What happened to "civil rights"? I am starting to realize that tolerance, stopping the hate, and equal rights all apply as long as you do not hold Christian beliefs. I hope and pray that they take a good look at their behavior and realize this is not the way to accomplish anything. In the mean time, I welcome the persecution. Our Lord said "Blessed are those who suffer persecution for my sake, theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Done with E! News

When Leo and I bought our CRV last year, our model came with free XM radio for a month, that we subscribed too after since we liked it. It was nice on my long commute to and from nursing school. While on those commutes, I would get tired of flipping through music and found E! news radio. I began to love listening to "news" of celebrities, who was dating who, wearing what, going where. I then started TIVOing E! News daily. I would just have it on while doing work around the house, and in my car, I'd listen to the radio. Since I've had Meeners, I don't think I've seen one half-hour show straight through, but I've played my TIVO's episodes here and there. It's not something that's ever ruled my life, and if I didn't see a minute of it for a week, I didn't think about it, but it was something I enjoyed watching and listening to.

Last week, Sirius and XM radios merged. E! News radio was not part of the new lineup of channels, so my link to the latest Hollywood trends and gossip was gone, particularly because I rarely watch tv now. When this happened, my first thought was, that's sad, but so good for my soul!

You girls know me, and you know, I've generally been up on my pop-culture, but I'm known amongst friends for knowing what's going on in Hollywood. I could tell you everyone JLo's been married to but I can't name all 12 apostles or even list the books of the Bible. I've been poisoning my mind and soul with not only gossip, but bad influences. I can't be so sure that I won't be influenced by certain styles to dress immodestly, or think a certain way. I know recently when they showed Jessica Alba in a bikini with her "body back" just 4 months after giving birth, I compared my own body with hers. This is so unimportant and I'm filling my head with this junk. My body housed life for 9 months and it's not going to ever be the same, nor should it be.

The gossip, I always knew deep down was wrong. If it's not ok to talk about people I know and judge them, why would it be ok for celebrities. Somehow, because they're in the media that gives us the right to know their personal business and then judge them on that? No, but it took me a while to actually put this into practice.

I didn't have this realization and flood of grace to finally open my eyes until last night while driving to the abbey, so when I got home from Irvine today, and looked at my Tivo, I knew what I had to do. I deleted 2 episodes and cancelled my season pass. As small a thing as it is, I'm ashamed to say, it's going to be tough for me to resist the urge to turn it on, but right now, the interest isn't there. Praise God.

I don't know if any of you girls have the same temptation but it's just junk. We should be filling our minds with what the Lord thinks of us and all of His good news, not what the world values. I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner, but I'll just thank God for opening my eyes and heart to it now.

Asked to leave because of Prop 8

Hey everyone. So apparently there's been an issue at a local Albertsons. Please read on and send an email to the email address that I have provided if possible. The more people that let them know that the manager's actions were unacceptable the better!

Subject: Albertsons El Camino Real at La Costa Carlsbad CA

albertsonscustomercare@albertsons.com

Dear Sirs,

I am writing to you about the management at the Albertson's store located in Carlsbad CA at El Camino Real and La Costa Avenue .

I am a patron of this store and have been shopping there every week for the past four years. Today the store manager, Alan, made a decision that makes it impossible for me to ever shop in that store again.

The Knights of Columbus were conducting a fund raiser for The Mentally Challenged. The funds raised for these adults stay in our community and all the proceeds from the three day fund raiser are given to this organization, the Arc of North County. I realize that Albertsons and their competition hire mentally challenged adults and I have shopped at Albertsons in part because of this policy.

The Knights of Columbus had obtained permission from store management to conduct the fund raiser in front of the store on El Camino. Friday's fund raiser went well but on Saturday several customers confronted the Knights and complained to Alan, the store manager, about the Knights presence in front of the store. These people were upset because the Knights of Columbus had supported Yes on Prop 8. The fund raiser being conducted had nothing to do with politics. However, the store manager decided that he didn't want to have complaints and told the Knights that being in front of his store was a privilege and they were to leave immediately.

This was not a political rally. The Knights were not making a political statement and they were not harassing any Albertson customers. Your store manager made the situation political by evicting the fund raisers and interjecting politics. This is a country where people have freedom of speech and I respect that, however, can you explain how supporting Prop 8 has anything to do with raising funds for the adults in our community who are mentally challenged? The Knights inability to fund raise at this location for the next two days will seriously impact the amount of funds given to these people.

I feel that Alan made a poor decision and does not support your corporate policy concerning mentally challenged adults. I would like a response to my complaint other than this was a privilege and he was denying this privilege because four customers complained.

This incident has motivated me to inform my fellow church members, my neighbors who shop at Albertsons, and the Mormon churches in the area so they can decide if they will continue to support your store at La Costa and El Camino after this politicized decision. I would hope that the your company hired store manager who could think logically and respond to complaints from customers with facts. The Knights were not acting politically and denying the fund raiser only hurts adults in our community who need help.

Marriage is Defended

Thank you California, Arizona and Florida for defending the sacred union of marriage. Every time the issue of same-sex marriage comes to the voters we defend marriage as it is defined by our creator. Although this is a sad day in many ways, I am extremely proud of the work we are doing to protect marriage. California we have proved that we are not all liberals here. God's beautiful gift of marriage will not be offended. Liberal judges WILL NOT take away our voice.

Here's to You, Mr. President

Today is a sad day for our nation.

On a day when an American, an African-American achieved his dream of becoming president, a day that seemed inconceivable 30 years ago when his ancestors were being persecuted for their color, we see the lives of so many being persecuted to an extent that they are deemed unworthy of life. This man, who claims to stand for a better American, for change, refuses to make a change to allow these defenseless people to take a breath in this world. Our nation has elected a radically liberal man to lead our country. There are tears in the crowd as he takes the stage to persuade our country that he will make it better. They cry tears of joy in their ignorance and apathy as Leo and I cry tears of sadness at the direction our country is taking.

We have lost this chance of overturning Roe vs. Wade. There are numerous other securities in jeopardy, but the biggest of these is life. It is a sad, sad day for our country.

The good news is...it is only one battle lost. We've read the end of the book. We know who wins this war.

So here's to you Mr. President. Sit in your oval office and enjoy your moments of fleeting bliss because in the end, this nation too will fall. A greater one will exist and does exist eternally. We'll pray that someday, your heart will turn and you too can embrace the fullness of truth.

The Church fathers faced evil Roman emperors doing more evil tasks than our president. They stood strong even unto their deaths. The Lord may not be asking for our martyrdoms at this time, but He is asking for our prayers, for our evangelism, and for our sacrifice on a daily basis. Now is the time the Lord can raise up great saints in the face of great evil. There is no reason we all can't be saints.

Let this day remind us to strive each day to live Holy lives, to hold up the roof for those who can't bear as much weight. Let us run to the Eucharist, humble ourselves before our Blessed Mother, beg the intercession of the saints, love like we've never loved before, and thank God for the opportunities for graces and our ability to fulfill our purpose to know and love Him no matter who our president is.

When Life Gets Crazy...

I am sure that many young adults can relate to hectic and overwhelming daily schedules. Between being in escrow for a home, working 2 jobs and being pregnant, while my husband is juggling work, grad school and taking care of his exhausted wife, life for the past couple of months has been absolutely nuts in our novice household. We've tried to cut out some social activities, but even so, it seems as though we don't have time for LIFE right now, nevermind cooking and cleaning the apartment.

Does anybody have any suggestions for quick and budget-friendly meal ideas? Our take-out bill is getting out of control. I would greatly appreciate any organization/time-saving tips that might help us out until things cool down a bit!! Also, any suggestions for keeping up our prayer/spiritual life...Sadly it seems like that this always one of the firsts to get put on the back-burner!!

Election Day Prayer

Ever-faithful God, we consecrate the 2008 U.S. presidential election and our entire nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Loving Mother, Patroness and Protectress of the Americas.

We ask that You take our Nation into Your Loving Care, reach into the hearts of the electorate, and give them the strength and enlightenment to know your Will, and to exercise Your Will in their vote. Abba, Father, Thy Will Be Done!

Are we really pro-life?

I took my little 6-month niece/goddaughter to Mass with me on Sunday evening. I look very young and I am not married so do not wear a ring on my finger. I kept noticing throughout the church people looking at me with a look of disappointment and concern. As soon as I noticed they were staring at me they would awkwardly smile. I quickly realized that they probably thought my niece was my daughter and I was a single mom. Because I look so young they probably thought I was a teen/early 20's single mom. All these people apparently were disappointed with me. How pro-life is that? We tell girls to carry their babies to term but then we give them dirty looks for doing so. We need to do everything we can to encourage people to practice abstinence until marriage but if they do not and a young girls gets pregnant we MUST shower her with love and support. We need to honor her and celebrate her for not making another terrible decision. Then we need to encourage her to change her sexual behaviors. I understand now why so many girls feel pressured to have an abortion. If we are going to be pro-life, we need to be pro-life all the way and support girls who choose life, no matter what their situation.

Fasting and prayer for the election

Catholics can not in good conscience vote for a Pro-Choice candidate. Check out this amazing letter from Father John Corapi...

A Call for a Rosary Novena

Among the most important titles we have in the Catholic Church for theBlessed Virgin Mary are Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of the Rosary. These titles can be traced back to one of the most decisive times in thehistory of the world and Christendom. The Battle of Lepanto took placeon October 7 (date of feast of Our Lady of Rosary), 1571. This proved tobe the most crucial battle for the Christian forces against the radicalMuslim navy of Turkey. Pope Pius V led a procession around St. Peter'sSquare in Vatican City praying the Rosary. He showed true pastoralleadership in recognizing the danger posed to Christendom by the radicalMuslim forces, and in using the means necessary to defeat it. Spiritualbattles require spiritual weapons, and this more than anything was abattle that had its origins in the spiritual order-a true battle betweengood and evil.

Today we have a similar spiritual battle in progress-a battle betweenthe forces of good and evil, light and darkness, truth and lies, lifeand death. If we do not soon stop the genocide of abortion in the UnitedStates, we shall run the course of all those that prove by their actionsthat they are enemies of God-total collapse, economic, social, andnational. The moral demise of a nation results in the ultimate demise ofa nation. God is not a disinterested spectator to the affairs of man.Life begins at conception. This is an unalterable formal teaching of theCatholic Church. If you do not accept this you are a heretic in plainEnglish. A single abortion is homicide. The more than 48,000,000abortions since Roe v. Wade in the United States constitute genocide bydefinition. The group singled out for death-unwanted, unborn children.

No other issue, not all other issues taken together, can constitute aproportionate reason for voting for candidates that intend to preserveand defend this holocaust of innocent human life that is abortion.

I strongly urge every one of you to make a Novena and pray the Rosary toOur Lady of Victory between October 27th and Election Day, November 4th.Pray that God's will be done and the most innocent and utterlyvulnerable of our brothers and sisters will be protected from thisbarbaric and grossly sinful blight on society that is abortion. Nowoman, and no man, has the right to choose to murder an innocent humanbeing.May God grant us the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and counsel toform our conscience in accordance with authentic Catholic teaching, andthen vote that well-formed Catholic conscience.

God Bless You
Fr. John Corapi

Welcome Fall

I've always considered myself a summer girl, but I have to admit that this time of year gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. The crisp fresh air, blue skies, the smell of fireplaces being lit and cool snuggle-appropriate nights are just a few things that I love. I also love wearing scarves, and deep fall color sweaters again. I love picking pumpkins and roasting the pumpkin seeds after! I love the returned smells of hot tea, coffee, chili, baked goods and other comfort foods that are only fitting for cooler weather.

Although we don't get much of it in Southern California, I have fond memories of apple-picking and jumping in piles of brightly-colored crunchy leaves as a child. We would take family drives through wildlife to admire breathtaking colorful sites. It is as though God took a paintbrush to nature Himself! Such beauty!

Ok, its your turn, what do YOU love about fall??

Abortion Extremism

For those of you who may disagree with me, don't worry I am not a U.S. citizen yet, and will not have the right to vote during the next elections. I do feel a responsibility as a Catholic however, to bring up a very concerning issue about one of our presidential candidates.

This following article -- Obama's Abortion Extremism may seem extreme at first, but as I read on, all evidence was supported and accurate, and the author brings up several very good points.
"Barack Obama is the most extreme pro-abortion candidate ever to seek the office of President of the United States. He is the most extreme pro-abortion member of the United States Senate. Indeed, he is the most extreme pro-abortion legislator ever to serve in either house of the United States Congress."
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily get butterflies or warm fuzzies when I think about John McCain, but the question we really need to ask ourselves is: Who is Jesus? What does He want? Ultimately, we should think about these questions before we make any action throughout our day. There is no doubt that a national election vote is a grave decision that should be given much thought and prayer. Please read the article I posted above, and spend some time meditating what Jesus is calling you to do during these approaching elections. May God bless America and its future generations.

30 seconds of objectification

There's a commercial for an LG cell phone that goes like this: A gil and her boyfriend are sitting down at a cafe and she's talking about something and two pretty girls walk by. The guy looks at the girls and checks out their backsides using his shiny new cell phone and then gets a text from his girlfriend saying "OMG UR A PIG!!"

How many things are wrong with this 30 second spot? Go! (I'm trying to start a discussion here!)

We're NOT boys!

Since the whole feminist uprising (soooo last millenium!) society has tried to tell us that we can do anything boys do just as good as boys and we are equal in every way. Well, that's not entirely true (unless you can name one girl who can pee standing up :P). Males and females totally have differences that we need to celebrate instead of trying to mask.

Yesterday my neighbor and I were letting our babies play. Her son is 5 days older than my baby girl. The were both in diapers, sharing his play gym. The boy was using both hads to grab at toys and anything near him and trying to roll over on his side, while my girl was more interested in looking at his mother and cooing at her then looking back at me, just to make sure I hadn't left. Isn't that amazing?? He is already more interested in motor skills and she already prefers to communicate and we haven't done anything special to make them this way.

Even though this is just one tiny difference, we really should be celebrating what makes us uniquely women. Being Equal doesn't mean being the SAME. Eve was Adam's equal partner before the fall, but "male and female He created them." :)

Dove on "beauty"

I don't know about the rest of you but I am sick of the Dove soap adds trying to redefine beauty for us. They say that their purpose is to challenge societies ideas of beauty as thin and shapeless and say that curves are beautiful too. They have completely missed what women really need to hear these days. We don't need to hear that curves make us beautiful, instead we need to hear that what makes us beautiful has nothing to do with our bodies. Our beauty comes from who we are not what we look like. We are all made in the image and likeness of God and that makes us beautiful. We need to take the focus off the body. Women will not really embrace the way their body looks until they know their true dignity apart from their physical appearance. No one would deny that Mother Theresa was one of the most beautiful women to ever live. Clearly this has nothing to do with her physical appearance. It has everything to do with the fact that when you look into her eyes you encounter our Lord and his Blessed Mother. That is what makes us beautiful as women. So please Dove, if you want to launch a real campaign to redefine beauty look to Our Blessed Mother as your model. Put her face on all your billboard instead of half naked women who happen to be the opposite of what society claims is beautiful.

The Problems of Premarital Sex

Last night Leo and I were at dinner with his cousin and her boyfriend having a political/spiritual discussion. They are both pro-life, yet voting for Obama. Lame. When talking about the abortion issue, we naturally got into the discussion of teen pregnancy. To them, the major unfortunate consequence of pre-marital sex, is pregnancy, so their solution for these teens is birth control.

Most of my clients at the crisis pregnancy center were in my office because they were concerned they were facing an "unplanned" pregnancy. The ones who were not pregnant, generally breathed a big sigh of relief when I shared the results of their test with them. In their eyes, their crisis was over. In my eyes, this was only the symptom of a crisis. This wasn't just one bad decision to have sex with their "partner." This was the result of a series of bad decisions that led them, by the grace of God, to me.

So when they think they're in the clear, and they are ready to walk out the door after the negative results, I hit them hard. Not physically, though sometimes that might be what they need (j/k), but we proceed to discuss their relationship, and why they're having sex.

To me, the saddest part of their choice to have premarital sex is that they develop these disordered attachments towards the boys they choose to give themselves to. These girls wind up permanently bonded, through oxytocin (a hormone which is meant to permanently bond them to their spouse, or child) to that male they first have sex with. They can't see clearly or make rational decisions because their judgement is clouded by their physical attachment to this person. Their lives are thrown upside down but they think their right side up. Their bodies think they're in love.

This is why birth control is not allowing women to keep their freedom by preventing the "burden" of children, but is rather stripping them of their femininity and allowing them to be objectified all the more in premarital sex.

The beautiful consequence of these actions is that God creates new souls to love. The sad part is that the people in these relationships don't know what love is, so they need be shown. Birth control prevents the life giving consequence of premarital sex; it does not prevent the heartbreak. And yet, so many see it as a simple solution. If they only knew the truth...
My hubby's aunt posted this on her blog ad I thought the guy made some interesting points. My fave point was how our schools indoctrinate kids to be liberal. Sad, but true.

As baby screamed in the carseat on our way to and from dinner with our friends I couldn't help but think of people who sigh, eye roll, or make rude comments (right next to you, as if you can't hear over the crying!). Some days it's enough to make you feel like you should never take the baby outin public. I guess they were such perfect babies and children that they never made a peep in public! Their parents must have had it so easy. And I'm sure such perfect people also had perfect babies that were also quiet in public every time. Right. :P

The hardest place for the baby to cry is during Mass. We normally go to a High Mass said in Latin so it's silent...except for Baby last night. Right before the Consecration she decided to let out a nice big burp and during communion she was tired and just started wailing (I like to think of it as chanting with the choir). I know some people think that you should never bring babies and little ones to Mass so they won't distract others, but how will they learn??? Jesus said "Let the little children come to me" and we really shouldn't be depriving these little Saints of time with Jesus. Even though they aren't always aware of what's happening and may not understand, the Lord definetelyis planting little seeds in them each time they spend time with Him.

Healthy Snack

I found a great recipe online for "Healthy" Banana Oat Muffins. My hubby made these for me and the baby, and we absolutely love them! They are made with whole grains, and make a great breakfast and snack!

  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a 12 cup muffin pan with paper liners or coat with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the bananas, brown sugar, egg, vanilla and oil. Combine the whole wheat flour, oats, cinnamon, ginger, baking powder and baking soda; stir into the banana mixture until blended. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin cups.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops spring back when lightly pressed, about 25 minutes. Cool for a few minutes in the pan before attempting to remove them.

ENJOY!!!

Planned Parenthood, hurting women since 1916

I am extremely concerned about a recent article I read. In North Carolina, two college members of "Students for Life" visited separate Planned Parenthood clinics, posing as underage women (ages 14 and 15) who had had sex with their mothers' live-in boyfriend. For both visits, Planned Parenthood staff acknowledged that this situation was defined as statutory rape, yet neither case was ever reported. Both girls were also given birth control pills without their parents' consent (allowing the situation to continue longer), and were sent home to take the After Morning Pill, to cover the rapists' crimes.

Now I realize that in society's eyes, the majority of people have trouble understanding why artificial birth control is harmful to women. Similarly, there is a large number of people in the world who do not understand how harmful abortion is to women. I know that it is safe to say, however, that the MAJORITY of society KNOWS that rape is detrimental to women, young and old. Can someone PLEASE explain to me how an organization that claims to "support women" can actually let something this serious slide by?!?

Feast of Guardian Angels

Happy feast of our Guardian Angels!

I'm sure we can all think of times when our Guardian Angel has assisted us during our earthly pilgrimage. Not only do they protect us from physical danger, but in many cases they can help us in times of temptation. I find it humorous that almost every time I say something mean, especially towards my husband, I tend to hurt myself (walk into something, trip, bite my tongue, paper cut, and other little clumsy things). I truly believe that my guardian angel enjoys teaching me little moral lessons!!

Vocations before Careers

Wedding bells came before I had a chance to figure out what I wanted to be “when I grow up”. This was definitely by default, because my parents raised me to finish school, find a job and figure out “who I am” before marriage. As a result, I’ve spent the first months of our marriage confused about where to work, what my “career goals” are, and what I should be spending my time doing before the baby stork arrives…

I am now learning that this “confusion”, has been an absolute blessing. Although trial and error has and will continually be involved, I feel that I am now able to explore employment opportunities that will allow me to put my marriage and family goals first. 1970’s feminists cringe at the idea of making your marriage part of your whole identity, but our vocation is God’s ultimate blessing on us, so who are we to not put it first?

Our society and education has boys and girls on identical tracks. Young men and women need to finish school and college, and then find a job and financial stability, and THEN, one can finally consider marriage and babies. I am an enormous supporter of women’s education and their place in the workforce, but should the fact that the majority of women will be called to motherhood, be ignored? Could the fact that so many women today are purposely delaying marriage and families until they have it “all figured out “be related to rising infertility rates?

Ironically, despite the fact that my mom was stay-at-home, marriage and motherhood was nothing but a vague idea for me while I was growing up, and I truly wish it would have been presented in a more respectable light. As a result, I always felt that God had given me far too many gifts and opportunities to stick me in a tiny home all-day with crying babies and dirty diapers. The past few months however, have taught me that all of my gifts ARE from God, and He is ultimately going to choose how they get used. This may mean that I will stay-at-home and devote my entire life to a large family, or it could mean that I will one day run for Vice President of the United States. Regardless of what path He will lead me on, my gifts will never go to waste as long as I put Him and my vocation first.

Knights of Columbus to Biden

After Nancy Pelosi made that absurd comment about what Catholics believe about abortion, I wrote to Archbishop Chaput to thank him for standing up and defending what we really believe. I didn't expect to get a response, but he actually wrote me back and asked for my prayers. Here is a letter from the Knights of Columbus to Biden about his ridiculous remarks:

Dear Senator Biden:
I write to you today as a fellow Catholic layman, on a subject that has become a major topic of concern in this yearʼs
presidential campaign.
The bishops who have taken public issue with your remarks on the Churchʼs historical position on abortion are far from alone.
Senator Obama stressed your Catholic identity repeatedly when he introduced you as his running mate, and so your statements carry
considerable weight, whether they are correct or not. You now have a unique responsibility when you make public statements about
Catholic teaching.
On NBCʼsMeet the Press, you appealed to the 13th Century writings of St. Thomas Aquinas to cast doubt on the consistent teaching
of the Catholic Church on abortion.
There are several problems with this.
First, Aquinas obviously had only a medieval understanding of biology, and thus could only speculate about how an unborn child
develops in the womb. I doubt that there is any other area of public policy where you would appeal to a 13th Century knowledge of
biology as the basis for modern law.
Second, Aquinasʼ theological view is in any case entirely consistent with the long history of Catholic Church teaching in this area,
holding that abortion is a grave sin to be avoided at any time during pregnancy.
This teaching dates all the way back to the Didache, written in the second century. It is found in the writings of Tertullian, Jerome,
Augustine and Aquinas, and was reaffirmed by the Second Vatican Council, which described abortion as "an unspeakable crime" and
held that the right to life must be protected from the "moment of conception." This consistent teaching was restated most recently last
month in the response of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to remarks by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Statements that suggest that our Church has anything less than a consistent teaching on abortion are not merely incorrect; they may
lead Catholic women facing crisis pregnancies to misunderstand the moral gravity of an abortion decision.
Neither should a discussion about a medieval understanding of the first few days or weeks of life be allowed to draw attention away
from the remaining portion of an unborn child's life. In those months, even ancient and medieval doctors agreed that a child is
developing in the womb.
And as you are well aware, Roe v. Wade allows for abortion at any point during a pregnancy. While you voted for the ban on partial birth
abortions, your unconditional support for Roe is a de facto endorsement of permitting all other late term abortions, and thus calls into
question your appeal to Aquinas.
I recognize that you struggle with your conscience on the issue, and have said that you accept the Churchʼs teaching that life begins
at conception – as a matter of faith. But modern medical science leaves no doubt about the fact that each person's life begins at
conception. It is not a matter of personal religious belief, but of science.
Finally, your unwillingness to bring your Catholic moral views into the public policy arena on this issue alone is troubling.
There were several remarkable ironies in your first appearance as Senator Obamaʼs running mate on the steps of the old state capitol
in Springfield, Illinois.
His selection as the first black American to be the nominee of a major party for president of the United States owes an incalculable
debt to two movements that were led by people whose religious convictions motivated them to confront the moral evils of their day –
the abolitionist movement of the 19th Century, and the civil rights movement of the 20th Century.
Your rally in Springfield took place just a mile or so from the tomb of Abraham Lincoln, who in April 1859 wrote these words in a
letter to Henry Pierce:
“This is a world of compensations; and he who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave. Those who deny freedom to others,
deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, cannot long retain it.”
Lincoln fought slavery in the name of “a just God” without embarrassment or apology. He confronted an America in which black
Americans were not considered “persons” under the law, and were thus not entitled to fundamental Constitutional rights. Today, children
of all races who are fully viable and only minutes from being born are also denied recognition as “persons” because of the Roe v. Wade
regime that you so strongly support. Lincolnʼs reasoning regarding slavery applies with equal force to children who are minutes, hours
or days away from birth.
The American founders began our great national quest for liberty by declaring that we are all “created equal.” It took nearly a century to
transform that bold statement into the letter of the law, and another century still to make it a reality. The founders believed that we are
“endowed by [our] Creator with certain unalienable rights,” and that first among these is “life.”
You have a choice: you can listen to your conscience and work to secure the rights of the unborn to share in the fruits of our hard-won
liberty, or you can choose to turn your back on them.
On behalf of the 1.28 million members of the Knights of Columbus and their families in the United States, I appeal to you, as a Catholic
who acknowledges that life begins at conception, to resolve to protect this unalienable right. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss
these issues personally with you in greater detail during the weeks between now and November 4.
Respectfully,
Carl A. Anderson
Supreme Knight
